What is a Septic System?
Septic systems are used when a property creating wastewater is not connected to sewer mains. A septic tank is the vessel into which wastewater (from toilets, washing machines, showers, sinks etc.) is directed via an inlet pipe. The tank separates the solids and liquids. The solids material separates into two layers with the heavier material settling to the bottom of the tank forming a ‘sludge’ layer and the lighter solids material floating on the surface forming a ‘solids raft’ which floats on the clarified liquids, known as ‘sullage’ or ‘greywater’, in the middle. The solids material is retained and digested by naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria in the tank. The resulting sullage/greywater flows out of the tank via the discharge pipe to an absorption trench (also known as a drain or leach field) or to another tank for further treatment and return to the groundwater system.
The tank may be constructed of concrete, plastic or fibreglass and can vary in size and holding capacity. Older domestic septic tanks are usually 1850L or 2400L in capacity; most modern installations use 2850L or 3300L tanks. Commercial premises may use a domestic size tank or lager capacity tanks, dependant on the numbers of staff or public using the facilities.
A septic tank may also be referred to as a ‘solids tank’ or the ‘primary tank’ in a septic system involving more than one tank. The ‘secondary tank/s’ may also be referred to as a ‘liquids tank/s’ or ‘secondary tank/s’.
Septic pump out
Generally under normal conditions a domestic system will require a pump out every 5-7 years. In this time the sludge layer increases in volume in the bottom of the tank. The solids raft on the surface also thickens. As more waste enters the tank there is nowhere for it to rise or sink to settle and be broken down by the residing anaerobic bacteria. When the septic tank reaches this stage it is no longer operating correctly. This results in the overflowing of raw solids material via the sullage/greywater flowing from the outlet pipe of the tank. These solids will be carried with the sullage/greywater and contaminate the absorption trench, or flow into the secondary tank (liquids tank) of a multi-tank septic system. As these solids build up in the absorption trench or secondary tank they can cause a foul odour, be very damaging, and prevent these parts of the septic system from operating efficiently an effectively. The untreated effluent escaping can potentially contaminate the surrounding water table or ground water.

If you’re having an outdoor event and need somewhere to empty your dishwashing water waste, we can supply you with sullage drums that can be plumbed together by a manifold system with each drum holding approximately 200 litres. We offer a complete service including delivery, set up, pump outs and removal of the sullage drums.
Grease trap waste is generated by commercial businesses such as fast food chains, bakeries, shopping centres, butchers and restaurants. These businesses must comply with the requirements set out by VIC Water guidelines.
We offer a complete service of your grease trap that includes the pumping out, scraping down the sides and deodorising to help keep odours to a minimum. We service and clean all grease trap & grease arrestors within the food & beverage industry. We can service grease traps on an ‘at call’ basis or if you prefer it can be put on a regular run and pump outs would only ever be carried out early in the morning to avoid any complaints from neighbouring businesses.
The frequency of cleaning or pumping out depends on the size of the grease trap and the amount of waste (grease and food scraps) that enter the grease trap. As a guideline scheduled pump outs should occur every 13 weeks. The consequences of not maintaining your grease trap by a licensed service provider are not only bad odours but greasy waste may enter the sewer system causing blockages and over flow and flooding onto your property. If this happens in a commercial kitchen then this would mean that the kitchen would be closed until the flooding has been removed.

Lift Shaft Cleaning
Lift technicians raise the lift and lock it safely, once locked and safe we will remove all liquid waste from bottom of shaft, remove hydraulic oil spills, completely hose out bottom, and remove any solid waste materials also. Some jobs require both baby truck and larger truck to complete job, transferring larger volumes from carpark basements to larger truck on street level.
An absorption trench, also known as a drain field or leach field, further treats the sullage/greywater that flows from a septic tank before returning the treated water to the natural groundwater system. An absorption trench is generally a series of perforated plastic distribution pipes laid in gravel trenches over a layer of soil. As sullage/greywater flows from the septic tank via the outlet pipe into the trench, the water level rises and passes through pores in the plastic trench liner into the rubble outside. The water is drawn up through the rubble by capillary action towards the ground surface. When passing through the rubble, followed by sand and soil layers, the nutrients or contaminants are treated by naturally occurring bacteria, further purifying the water. Finally, as the water nears the ground surface it is drawn up via evaporation or transpiration from the grass covering by the sun. The UV rays of the sun further act as a purifying action on the wastewater.
If a septic tank is not pumped out when required, solids matter can be carried via sullage/greywater into the trench, forming a layer on the sides of the trench liner that blocks the pores in the liner preventing the passage of the water through to the rubble layer. If let go too long, the solids may even be forced through the pores into the rubble, filling it with a thick sludge that prevents the trench from operating properly and drying out by the usual process. This results in a contaminated boggy area in the region of the absorption trench. The efficiency of an absorption trench can also be affected by heavy or prolonged periods of rain.
You should consult your local council to ensure all requirements are met when installing your septic system and absorption trench. Generally, an absorption trench should be positioned in a region that receives good sunlight, has permeable soil, runs perpendicular to a sloping gradient, and is an appropriate distance from dwellings/buildings.
Servicing of your Aerated Wastewater treatment system (AWTS)
In accordance with local councils and VIC Health your aerated wastewater treatment system (AWTS) requires servicing on a quarterly basis. Councils maintain a register of each AWTS and require that service providers forward a copy of this report once a quarterly service has been completed.
Systems in poor condition can not only pose a health risk but can become more costly in the long term then a regular servicing schedule.

The following items will be checked at each 3-monthly service:

the condition of all pipes and hoses

Do it yourself Maintenance
Follow these important steps to protect your septic system. Adhering to a few basic do’s and don’ts is usually all it takes to keep your septic system functioning efficiently.
1. Conserve water to reduce the load on the septic system. For example, do laundry throughout the week instead of all at once; use flow reducer nozzles on showers; install water-conserving toilet cisterns.
2. Tree roots that invade your septic system can do major damage. Keep trees at least 30 metres away from the septic system. Trees with aggressive roots, such as willows, should be planted even farther away.
3. A soggy effluent line cannot handle waste effectively, so design landscaping, roof gutters, and foundation drains to divert excess water away from the septic system and drainfield lines.
4. NEVER flush cat litter, disposable nappies, sanitary napkins, tampons, paper hand towels, facial tissues, coffee grounds, cigarette butts, or similar items down the toilet. They’ll quickly fill and clog your septic tank and kill beneficial bacteria in the septic tank.
5. Use garbage disposals wisely. They can double the amount of solids added to a septic tank. Consider installing a top-of-the-line disposal, which will grind waste into smaller particles that break down more quickly when they reach the system.
6. DO NOT overuse heavy cleaners, especially those containing bleach. They kill beneficial bacteria in the septic tank, so solids cannot break down as quickly.
7. DO NOT use Vinegar and/or Baking Soda to clean toilets, baths, sinks or troughs as it changes the pH and alkaline levels in the septic tank/treatment plant. This will kill off beneficial bacteria in the septic system.
8. DO NOT pour grease down the drain. It will eventually clog your effluent line. If that happens you’ll need an extensive (and expensive) septic system repair–and if there’s no space for a repair drainfield you will have serious problems establishing any type of septic system.
9. DO NOT pour hazardous chemicals, oils, paint, etc down the drain. They can and will harm your septic system and will eventually find their way into the groundwater.
10. DO NOT drive over the drainfield, build a structure on top of it, or cover it with concrete or asphalt. There are many nightmare stories about renovations built over septic tanks, above-ground swimming pools built over septic tanks and the drainfield. That’s a definite DON’T!
11. Plant grass over the effluent line to minimize soil erosion.
1. Remember that unless you have a grey water diverter fitted to an all water system, everything that goes down your toilet, kitchen sink, laundry trough, shower drain or bath drain will end up in your septic tank.
2. Adopt better water conservation methods and consider during purchase, a more water efficient washing machine or dishwasher.
3. Reduce water levels for small loads of laundry.
4. Install half flush toilet cisterns to reduce the amount of water needed to flush the toilet, for toilet usage where “toilet paper” is NOT used. However ensure that you ALWAYS use full flush when toilet use includes “toilet paper”, as generally there is insufficient water in a half flush to move the toilet paper into the tank, causing it to lay in the line and eventualy can lead to a blockage.
5. Check the packaging of the products that will eventually enter your septic tank, to identify if they are suitable for use in a septic tank system. Some toilet papers have dyes that kill the essential bacteria required to break down the solids in the septic tank.
6. Never attempt to open a septic tank yourself, unless you are aware of the lid weight and opening process. As you may hurt yourself or even drop the lid in the tank and they are very difficult to get out.!
7. Never get inside a septic tank! The gases in there can be dangerous and DEATH MAY RESULT!!! This space is deemed a “Confined Space” and special requirements for entry are required. Get a professional, they are cheaper than your life!
