Be aware that gas leaks can commonly occur near: gas meter, cylinders or bottles, stove, heater, oven, hot water heater, bbq, bayonet points connections and fittings. It’s easy and safe to check for a gas leak yourself. Turn off all your gas appliances at the control point or pilot light (hot water heater). Write down the gas meter reading before you go to bed and check to see if it has changed by morning. If the number on your meter has risen overnight, assuming the gauge is accurate, then there is a gas leak.

Gas leaks can be dangerous and it is essential that a qualified gas fitter tests and repairs any gas leak on either natural gas or LPG gas pipelines or appliances. If your existing gas pipes (natural gas or LPG) require repair, replacement, upgrading or extending then we have the right solution for you too. Natural Gas

  • Natural gas is a colourless, odourless mixture of gases made up mostly of methane (CH4).
  • Other gases that can form part of natural gas include small amounts of ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10).
  • Methane burns relatively cleanly to produce heat energy and the by-products of water and carbon dioxide. Inefficiencies in burning can produce small amounts of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides.
  • Natural gas is lighter than air. So if it leaks from a pipe or appliance, it won’t sink and form dangerous pools of explosive gas but will disperse in the air.
  • In certain concentrations, natural gas can be explosive, so it should always be treated with care.
  • For safety reasons, an odour is added to the gas so that a person with a normal sense of smell can easily detect leakages. The odour additive is Methyl Mercaptan (Methanethiol: CH3SH) which is a byproduct of decomposition that smells like rotten egg due to the presence of sulphur. Humans can detect the strong smell of methyl mercaptan in the air at extremely low concentrations, starting at around 1.6 parts per billion. This makes it an ideal additive to odourless gases for safety detection.

Domestic Use

Natural gas dispensed from a simple stovetop can generate temperatures in excess of 1100 °C making it a powerful domestic cooking and heating fuel. In urban and suburban Melbourne it is generally supplied through pipes to homes, where it is used for many purposes including stove range tops and ovens, clothes dryers, stand alone heaters, central heating and water heaters/boilers. Heaters in homes and other buildings may include boilers, furnaces, and water heaters.

Liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and to a lesser extent compressed natural gas (CNG) are more commonly used in rural homes without connections to piped-in public utility services, camping, barbeques and portable grills, because they can be stored conveniently in a steel pressure vessel. Gas bottles and cylinders can be safely transported by road vehicle and are commonly sold at petrol stations, camping stores and gas retailers. They are usually stored as a compact liquid under moderate pressure and burned as a dry gaseous vapour. (It expands to approximately 270 times its liquid volume when reverting to vapour).
